Social Innovation Strategies for Ethical and Trustworthy AI: The Crucial Role of a Facilitator

On September 24, 2024, Miriam Cabrita, a representative of SHINE 2Europe, presented the multi-disciplinary approach to fostering trustworthy AI in healthcare during the First Forum on Medicine and Biomedical Engineering: Synergies and Challenges. The event, hosted by the Lisbon Medical Sciences Society in Lisbon, Portugal, gathered clinicians, researchers, and (aspiring) engineers to discuss the intersection of engineering and medicine.

In her presentation, Miriam introduced the social innovation framework proposed by SHINE for the RadioVal project. This framework aims to ensure the active involvement of diverse stakeholders throughout the entire lifecycle of AI technologies.

Miriam emphasised the critical need for a facilitator role within this ecosystem—someone who can act as a bridge among patients, healthcare professionals, IT experts, policy makers, social scientists, and hospital administrators, among others. This role is vital to aligning interests, addressing ethical and regulatory concerns, and promoting the successful integration of AI tools in real-world healthcare settings.

As part of the RadioVal project, SHINE 2Europe has conducted three rounds of multistakeholder engagement sessions, supplemented by additional workshops and activities, to co-create pathways for the practical deployment of RadioVal’s AI-driven solutions. These efforts highlight the importance of a collaborative and inclusive approach to innovation, ensuring that AI tools are both effective and ethically sound.
